Across oceans and decades, a remarkable group of heroes, Nilis Mockler, Jim Tucker, Delmar Beard, Don Graves, and Joe Etheredge, made their journey once more. These World War II veterans traveled thousands of miles to commemorate the 81st anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Along the way, they made a meaningful stop in Guam, an island deeply connected to their legacy. There they were welcomed by local leadership and embraced by a grateful community that understands the weight of their sacrifice.

At USO Naval Base Guam, our team had the true honor of hosting a special meet-and-greet. Inside our doors, service members sat face-to-face with these heroes, sharing conversations, stories, and moments that bridged generations. In that space, the USO mission came to life, connecting today’s service members with those who have served before them.

Through these interactions, a sense of home was created. Service members were reminded that no matter how far they are from home, they are never alone.

For many in the community, this visit carried even deeper meaning. Joe Etheredge, who helped liberate Guam during the war, returned to the island making his visit not just a stop along the way, but a powerful full-circle moment in history. Emotions ran high as stories were shared of courage, resilience, and the realities of war that shaped both the island and the lives of those who fought for it.

Moments like these reinforce the USO mission: strengthening the well-being of service members by connecting them to those who have served before them and those who continue to serve today. Through these connections, we honor their legacy and ensure their stories are never forgotten.
