With Them Through the Journey, Behind Them Through the Mission

Sometimes, supporting our nation’s service members isn’t about grand gestures; it’s about being there exactly when they need it most.

As hundreds of Guam National Guard Soldiers prepared to deploy through Andersen Air Force Base in support of Exercise Keris Strike in Malaysia, the USO Andersen team stood ready to provide comfort and care and remind service members they are not alone.

240 Soldiers from the Guam National Guard’s Infantry Battalion and Guam Army National Guard Joint Force Headquarters gathered at the Andersen Passenger Terminal in the late hours of the night to prepare for their early departure. With over 200 troops waiting to board, the USO arrived with refreshments that provided a moment of comfort, encouragement, and fuel before the journey began. Offering more than just snacks and drinks, but rather it provided a moment of comfort, encouragement, and fuel before deployment.

Hours later, additional Guam Guardsmen and members of the Oklahoma and Illinois National Guard arrived at the terminal. As they prepared to head to transport to the exercise, the unexpected happened. What was aimed at being a quick stop turned into an unexpected delay, causing service members to be held on base with limited options for rest and comfort.

Without hesitation, the USO Andersen staff sprang into action. With center operations normally closed on Sundays, staff members and dedicated volunteers rearranged their plans and eagerly stepped up, giving their time so the center could open its doors. Together, they transformed an unexpected delay into an opportunity to care for nearly 200 service members. The USO helped service members stay connected to home, during the unexpected delay. From comfortable chairs, wi-fi, and snacks, service members could recharge and rest in comfort.

This mission was made possible by people who believe deeply in serving those who serve. From staff members who answered the call outside normal operating hours to volunteers who willingly gave up part of their weekend, every act of kindness reflected the heart of the USO mission. Their dedication ensured that no service member faced an unexpected delay alone.

But the USO’s support didn’t end when the Soldiers departed for Guam. As the mission continued, service members trained alongside allied forces during Exercise Keris Strike. In the remote jungles of Malaysia with austere conditions, the USO tent provided a place of respite, relaxation, Wi-Fi and a familiar touch of home to service members carrying out their mission.

When the mission was complete, the USO was there once again. As the Soldiers traveled back through Guam, USO Andersen and USO Tumon Bay welcomed them home with packed treats and a heartfelt reminder that their service and sacrifice were appreciated. The USO team that stood with them before departure continued to stand beside them throughout training and was there to welcome them home at the end of their journey.

From refreshments at the passenger terminal, to comfort during an unexpected delay, to expeditionary support in the jungle, and finally to a warm welcome home, the USO was there from beginning to end.

It was more than support for a single flight, an unexpected delay, or one military exercise. It was a commitment to be there through every stage of the mission. Moments like these remind us that supporting our military isn’t just about the destination; it’s about every step of the journey. Whether preparing service members for departure, caring for them during the unexpected, supporting them while they carry out their mission, or welcoming them home, the USO remains committed to strengthening the well-being of the people serving in America’s military and the families who stand beside them.

As these Soldiers returned home, their journey reflected the heart of The Mission Behind Every Mission: wherever our service members are called to go, the USO is committed to being there and supporting them before they leave, standing beside them while they serve, and welcoming them home when the mission is complete.

Because behind every mission our service members carry out is another mission: for the USO to ensure they never have to do it alone.
